A Service Dog Who helped ‘Ms. Veteran America’
Capt. Molly Mae Potter’s post-traumatic stress disorder was unbearable after a rocket explosion in Afghanistan. She is the daughter of two Army veterans and didn’t want to ask for help to look weak.
“She started waking me up in the middle of the night. I thought she had to go outside, or needed water … eventually I realized she was waking me up as I was having night terrors,” said Potter, who lives in Austin, Texas. “So I stopped having them. I could finally start sleeping through the night … My brain was finally healing itself because I was getting eight hours of sleep.”

Rescue Cat Takes in Orphaned Kitten

Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals Making Comeback
The species is considered critically endangered, with fewer than 1,200 left in the wild. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program recorded 121 monk seal pups this year, up from 103 in 2013. The increase might seem minor, but for a species with such a small population, it’s a huge victory.

The Bear That Walked Like a Human May Have Been Killed
Pedals, a bear that could walk upright in New Jersey, is thought to have been killed by a hunter with a bow and arrow last week. Lisa Rose Rublack, an activist who had led a petition to put Pedals in a sanctuary, said that state officials on the scene confirmed a carcass brought in by a hunter was Pedals, although the state’s official press office says biologists cannot conclusively confirm the animal’s identity, absent a tracking collar or a history of DNA records.

Hotel Manager Saves Guests Dog From Elevator
A hotel guest gets on the elevator while holding his dog’s leash, but the dog isn’t following close enough. The elevator doors close with the dog still in the lobby and his leash caught between the doors. Duke steps out of a storage closet to see the dog stuck and quickly grabs the pooch to get the leash free as the dog is being yanked upward by the ascending elevator.
